Perfecting Protein Intake!! Protein is imperative to repair and build muscle tissue, which is the engine that burns the fuel in your body. Too much protein synthesis does not further increase muscle protein synthesis. It can result in conversion to fat storage and decrease appetite, which can be undesirable on a mass gain program. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, The American College of Sports Medicine , and the Dietitians of Canada all agree for lean, active people who resistance train regularly , without preexisting renal or hepatic conditions , generally recommend 1.2 - 2.0g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight (higher than the 0.8/kg found to be sufficient for healthy, sedentary adults). For those who have a high body fat percentage or are eating high carbohydrates for weight gain, it’s recommended to have 1.2 - 1.8/kg of protein per lean body mass. Research suggests we can optimize our protein intake with 20g-40g of high quality, complete protein per meal (this amount will provide the necessary 2g-3g of leucine to stimulate an anabolic signal). For this reason, a minimum of 20g protein per meal is recommended , but larger athletes , who have significant amount of muscle mass and training intensity , it’s better to shoot for the higher end of the range (40g). It is also preferred to eat protein at least every 3-5 hours (throughout the day to prevent a deficit from occurring by having available amino acids circulating (protein deficit). It is also easier on digestion to prioritize meal frequency over meal size. The reason for this is there is no mechanism in the body to store protein for later use. For fats, storage form is adipose tissue. For carbs, the storage form is glycogen. If there aren’t adequate available amino acids in the bloodstream , the body will take them from muscle tissue when other repairs or energy demands are prioritized.
