Keto vs Keto. Which does your plate look more like? 🥓 When it comes to any dogmatic diet, there is a “wrong” way to do it and then there is a more “balanced” approach. 🥓 The ketogenic diet has been around for almost 100 years, dating back to 1921 when it was discovered that fasting and a high fat + low carb diet decreased frequency and severity of epilepsy and seizures. 🥓 Now, the therapeutic benefits of ketogenic diets are being further studied for autism, depression, migraines, type 2 diabetes, weight loss, PCOS, Alzheimer, Parkinson, and even cancer. 🥓 Ketosis is the bodies ability to produce energy from ketone bodies through the oxidation of fatty acids. This shifts the body from a predominantly glycolytic state to burning more fat (from stored triglycerides + diet) for energy. 🥓 Why is this beneficial? Lower carb intake has been shown to lower circulating insulin levels, prevent blood sugar spikes, reduce inflammation, and increase fat loss. In addition, higher fat intake increases levels of leptin, a hormone responsible for satiation (fullness). 🥓 While your brain is one of the greatest utilizers of ketones (and rather efficient), your liver cannot use ketones for energy. 🥓 While there are many great benefits to following a keto/lower carb diet, I do not believe it is right for everyone. I am a bigger fan of cyclic keto > long term “strict keto.” But then again, food needs no labels 🤷🏼‍♂️ 🥓 The biggest issue people can run into on a ketogenic diet is the lack of fiber, phytochemicals, and micronutrients in the diet and the high amounts of animal protein consumption. 🥓 In fact, there are many people out there unknowingly eating more than the 10-20% recommended protein intake and therefore are not truly in a ketogenic state since their body is using the protein to create glucose via gluconeogenesis. 🥓 What you'll notice here is both these meals could be classified as keto. The point is that the right side is far superior in micronutrients, dietary fiber, phytochemicals, colorful carotenoids, and volume. In addition, the meal on the right is far less inflammatory and offers nearly the same amount of calories as the left. 🥓 Inspired by @livevitae

Sometimes I fall into a cooking rut where I’ll eat the same thing for 5 days... and other times like this week, I’ll feel like cooking a storm and bake bread and cake for days, make my own almond milk, and organize a potluck for 10 people. There’s no in between for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ I was feeling a little adventurous with my flaxseed bread this week and decided to add coconut flakes and cacao nibs. Verdict: me like! . Last year, I impulse-bought a $10 waffle iron at TJ Maxx and it was a total game changer! I came up with the waffle recipe in my cookbook, as well as the ones on my blog as well, and have pretty much been eating waffles weekly since. It was a Dash brand waffle maker, for those curious! Good morning keto ♥️ I recently discovered that when the body burns (good) fat instead of sugar (carbs) it's a much cleaner source of feul. Meaning no unwanted side effects like inflammation, insulin (energy) spikes and drops, hypoglycemia ect. Here's what I've noticed in the last few days from adopting a (plant-based-ish) keto diet ... - less hunger and a steady supply of energy - I've felt more alert and focused *no afternoon crashes :) - way less PMS symptoms * when your body is only burning fat your in a state of ketosis ... Which helps regulate hormones I will admit it's been challenging trying to check my sugar intake at the door mainly because it's mother fucking UBIQUITOUS but everyday I find a good substitute. Also I will most likely adopt plant based keto cycling ... Some days keto and some days not because in truth I'm just not ready to break up with potatoes yet! #ketodiet #ketotarian #ketosisistheplaceforme #ketobreakfast #ketomeplease

I was craving a sweet breakfast so I made chocolate raspberry noatmeal! Thanks for the inspiration @lachefencalzones! I know it doesn't LOOK amazing but trust me if tastes like chocolate bread pudding or something. ****** All I did was add about 1 tsp and 6 frozen raspberries to my normal noatmeal recipe, and then top with 2tbsp whipped cream. ****** PS I know this is like the 100th time I've posted noatmeal.... But if you haven't tried it yet it's my life mission to get you to 😂 it's seriously the easiest and healthiest keto meal possible. I measure out all the ingredients into little containers and store them in the fridge. So all I have to do is dump them in a pot with some water and 5 minutes later I have a super good for you meal! ****** Noatmeal Recipe: 2tbsp hemp hearts, 2tbsp almond flour, 2tbsp hazelnut meal (or ground pecans), 1tbsp flaxseed meal, 1tbsp chia seed, Salt and pumpkin pie spice to taste. Add 1/2 cup water and cook on the stove top over low heat 5 minutes just like oatmeal, or microwave about 60 seconds. Add heavy cream and vanilla if desired and enjoy! 360 cal / 4.7 net carb / 30 fat / 15 protein. Plus 413% your daily value of omega 3!!! Made some delish grain and sugar free (keto) choc chip cookies tonight 🍪🤤 was feeling a bit under the weather so this was exactly what I needed. Baking is so therapeutic 💆🏼‍♀️ (and delicious ☺️) 👇🏼RECIPE👇🏼 🍪 1.5t vanilla extract 🍪 1/3C coconut oil 🍪 0.5t baking soda 🍪 1/2t xanthan gum (optional, it just makes them chewier 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️) 🍪 2/3C golden monk sweetner (or sub for sweetner of choice) 🍪 1C almond flour 🍪 1/4C coconut flour 🍪 1 egg 🍪 1/2t cinnamon 🍪 70g dark chocolate 🍪 sea salt for sprinkling 📖 DIRECTIONS. Preheat oven to 150 decrees C. Whisk egg and add in liquid (+ cooled) coconut oil, sweetner, and vanilla. Add the rest of the ingredients. Shape into balls. And flatten. Cook for 15 mins, or until golden. Cool, sprinkle with sea salt. Enjoy ❤️ Macros for whole recipe: 1694 cals, 36.2g protein, 153g fat, 21.7g net carbs. For 12 cookies: 1.8 net carbs, 141 cals 🔎✨ double the recipe for more cookies 🥰
