Today’s reflection is about how my kids are still teaching me to show up with a sacrificial lifestyle. And while I’m angst-ing (a verb, now. You’re welcome.) over all the dangers of giving and the reasons why we shouldn’t sacrifice this particular thing and everything I think might go wrong and all the privileges that I enjoy that I don’t particularly want to give, my kids are always out there in front. Pushing us to lay down our adult notions of what we feel like we deserve and what we feel like we need and asking us to show up for the people who need it most. — My kids look, to me, like the One we’re waiting for: the God who came here, all the while knowing what kind of sacrifice he would be making. Knowing the violence and pain that would be coming his way, He could’ve chosen a home with all the material things to make his life easier, but instead he chose a humble working-class home. He knew how people would talk and judge when they saw the people he chose to hang out with, and he did it anyway. — This is the invitation for all of us this week: Lay it down. Whatever ‘it’ is. Could be money, could be comfort, could be material belongings, could be our illusions of safety, any of it, all of it. Lay it down. Live a down-to-earth lifestyle of love. — * Every week, I'll offer some reflections for your Advent season. The full posts are at the link in my profile. Use some of the readings and suggestions, all of them, none of them - this is an invitation to go a little deeper than what the bright and busy retail season typically calls us to. Link is in the profile. — #advent #adventreflections #christmas #hopewriters

My merry and good cheer don’t earn me anything—they are the outflow of knowing I have nothing to earn because Grace already earned it for me. My calendar full of Advent activities, my most creative Elf on the Shelf shenanigans, my lights so carefully strung—their prominence pales in light of what the One who created me says about me.The holiday parties I host, the Angel Trees kids I buy for, the shoe boxes I pack, the neighbors I surprise with cookies—all of this is because of who I am, not to determine who I am.⁣ ⁣ When I get it turned around, I turn round and round, snow-storm short-sighted. Christmas comes and goes—all a blur. And in January I come up feeling sharp the empty.⁣ ⁣ Where are you trying through your busy and your bustle this season to earn your value?⁣ ⁣ ** Excerpt from “White in December: Slowing Down to Simply Be”—link in profile.⁣ ⁣ #uncommonnormal #missionalliving #missionalcommunity #discipleship #disciplesmakingdisciples #identity #lovingmyactualneighbor #missionalcommunitylife #onmission #everydaymission #missionary #familyonmission #neighboring #helloneighbor #advent2019 #christmas2019 #whitechristmas #enneagram9 #hopewriter #hopewriters #hopewriterlife #bloggersofinstagram #bloggersofig #faithwriters #faithblogger #christianwriting #shewritestruth #gritandgrace⁣

» It’s taken me a few days to finally feel confident in sharing that over 6 months ago I decided to make some changes. Changes that began with choosing to live alcohol free. Looking back there were many things that kept me from reaching the full potential God had for me + alcohol was at the top of that list. I had to let go of the idea that if I said this was my goal then people would possibly think I had a problem. But that isn’t the case at all. We all have something in our lives that has the potential to hold us back from our purpose if it hasn’t already + as you read through this post I bet you know exactly what that “thing” is! Find community, tell a friend, allow that person to be your accountability partner. Whatever stronghold it is that hinders you // big or small // remember that you are strong, you are brave, + you have the power to overcome it with Jesus by your side! ✨

melissalovestewart. The juxtaposition of the Gospel continues to amaze me.

How it weaves

The juxtaposition of the Gospel continues to amaze me. How it weaves itself into every story of life. Bringing peace where there is conflict. Assurance where there is uncertainty. Rejoicing for sadness. Love for fear. Life for death. Over and over. The story of humility that gives us wings to soar like the eagles. The story of suffering that sends us to the seat of victory. The story of forsaking our plans and walking boldly in His. And this is where we live. This is where we abide. The pendulum swings us from being crucified with Christ to standing strong in our Lord. As Christ followers we find ourselves rushing from ‘being still’ to ‘walking boldly’ But it’s in the space between where we come to know rest. Don’t miss it. The place of stillness and solitude. The seat of reflection and anticipation. In this continual pursuit of dying to self and living in Christ we know that crucifixion leads to resurrection. Be encouraged, friend! This is the story of the Gospel. That redemption would come where there is no hope and offer a way to freedom for us all. Christ encompasses it all. The beginning from the end and every single space between. Keep resting. Keep walking. Keep abiding in Him. #peace #advent #abide

Isn't it so wonderful that God is concerned with every single detail of our lives? This verse always brings a smile to my face and reminds me that God took His beautiful time to form me piece by piece. He knitted me together in my mother's womb and saw that what He created was good! It's amazing to think that the Creator of the universe is also so concerned with every single one of His creations that He takes time on them... including you and me. . . . . #Jesusandcoffee #blessedisshe #singleness #waitingonGod #Bible #faith #coffee #blogger #trust #Godisgood #Proverbs31ministries #faithblogger #shetheroar #christiancreative #wellwateredwomen #shereadstruth #soulscripts #womenonamission #proverbs31woman #womenoftheword #hopewriters #discoverunder3k #coffeeandjesus #calledtocreate #loveGod #christian

My faith in Christ changes the way I see situations I can’t control— by leaving them at the feet of the father in prayer. It changes the way I see people who hurt me— by praying blessings over them so that there’s no space for anger or sadness to harden and hamper my heart. It changes the way I see my career and ambition— by making sure bringing glory to God is my first objective always. It changes the way I see the joys of this earth— seeing them as temporary moments that will not compare to the eternal joys of heaven. #thehonestshruth

One reason that I used to put so much pressure on myself was because I was chasing my own glory. 💕 This was a bitter pill to swallow. 😬 But once I did, I became free from the fear of the judgment of others and more importantly, my own. 🙂 Now that I make the choice to live for His glory (which needs to happen daily because of the flesh), I don't need to give into the fear of failing because God NEVER fails. 😃 He will qualify me for whatever purpose He has set out for me. 💪 Despite my weaknesses, He will use me. ğŸ˜Ž I don't need to keep my eyes on my limitations because He has none. 👀 I don't need to act like I'm on my own because I'm not. 🙂 I don't need to get all worked up like I have something to prove, because He has already proven His goodness and I'm under His wing. 😊 While I love all the influencers on IG trying to make a positive impact, one component missing from their message a lot of the time is the role that God's grace plays in our lives. 🤔 I'm so thankful that I can rely on God's grace and power because if I tried to do everything on my own, it wouldn't work. 🌿 It never did. 😑 In what ways are you living in God's grace? Shout out to all the moms of special needs kids whose children do not “cooperate” in the school holiday concert or church nativity: . . . 8 years ago my darling son was cast as the Star of Bethlehem for his school nativity. He did not sing one word. He did not to do a single piece of the choreography. He picked his nose the whole way through. When he wasn’t picking his nose, he screamed to get off the stage. The Star of Bethlehem did not want to be a *star*. . . . My husband thought this was hysterical. I did not. It was just another piece of evidence that my kid was not like the other kids. Was it is his “special needs” that made him so resistant to being a part of the concert? Or was it it just his personality? Or did he really have a huge booger he couldn’t get to and it was driving him nuts? I cried on the way home from that performance because I felt like I didn’t know what my expectations should be. . . . Fast forward 8 years later and my darling son still performs in his holiday school concerts. He tries to get us to laugh when he’s up there with the chorus. He doesn’t sing. He signs along with the other kids with hearing loss. Thankfully he’s not picking his nose any more. What I am most grateful for is that now he is *smiling*. . . . If I can encourage you with anything it is that sometimes we have to let time unfold to know what our expectations should be. In the beginning, we just don’t know what we don’t know. As a mom of a child with a specials needs child, Christmas can be a painful time of trying to navigate “expectations”. I feel you. You are not alone. Give it time, sweet friend. Even some of these painful memories turn into your favorite stories of joy. . . . Your friend, Noelle

Today is going to be a good day because even when friends, family, or others in our life let us down, God has always been and will always be faithful. People are human and make mistakes. They forget their promises or don’t take them as sacred. But God is the word, and He cannot lie. He will always stay true to His promises so stay close to the One who loves you and cares for you more than any person ever could. You know, there are some times in life you will want to give up. Mere looking or remembering your mates,be it schoolmates, age mates, whatsoever mates has made it,your antenna will turn up and you will start to feel bad though not that you ain't happy for them but you're sad because you think you ought to be in their positions or above and when something suddenly struck your mind with another episode of thinking like soap opera and you remember your mates that are no more, that deep sigh will just come from nowhere, then your thinking won't even know bearing within that moment. Truth be told, situations are not easy, circumstances of life are not easy to bear, issues of life are not easy to deal with but wetin person pikin go do now?we just have to put our heads up,it's just not time to give up. The sun we see ehn can still dry up clothes. You might be thinking, why it is always you,why you on this?,why you on that?but i want to assure you that it is not only you that is singing "why me". Everybody sings why me but with different tones, sounds and pitches which simply mean, the levels of "why mes" are different. You know,if those that are dead are opportune to sing why me like you do,see, they will be glad o but all the same,God will not do something and not leave the space for thanksgiving. My brother,it is not time to give up,it is just time to rise up.I know you might have tried rising up so many times but looks failing but don't forget the child that will walk, his leg at first will be thin. Why then don't you continue to try like the child that just want to gbese😘 ? My dear Sister ehn,you now have high blood pressure, seizure, you cannot breath well, you've even lost hope sef because everything seems turn upside down as if you are the only one devil has chosen to face. See ehn,it is not over until it is over o,it is just no time to lose hope,it is high time to raise hopes. Believe me,i know it is not easy but it is just doing the corpse's pikin like that ni,we no fit bury am with the corpse. The bone eaters are soon going to eat meat and the rag wearers are going to wear designers. Stay blessed😍😍😍😍 To be contd #poets #churchgirl #questionsforwriters #hopewriters

It’s a story we all know well...⁣ ⁣ Nervous Mom tentatively opens school pictures as questions plague her mind... Did my child pick her nose on camera? Will there be pb&j stains on her dress? Was this worth the money?⁣ ⁣ Then the photos come into focus as angels start singing 😇 🙌🏼⁣ ⁣ The mother falls to her knees with gratitude as “Joy to the World” begins to play in the background. ⁣ ⁣ She can hardly believe it! How did her ever distracted and eternally sticky toddler transform into a catalog model?!⁣ ⁣ Rather than try to explain this sacred Christmas miracle, she begins softly singing the chorus of iconic Mariah Carey Christmas song “All I Want for Christmas is You.”⁣ ⁣ A single relieved tear gently slips down her cheek as she opens Instagram/Facebook...

What must it have been like to be in Jesus’ nucleus family? The one with Mary and Joseph and his half siblings and I suppose grandparents and definitely at least one cousin? Did He experience sibling rivalry? What were celebrations and holidays like? Did he know the word of family drama? What family memories did He cherish most? Was the majority of His family proud of Him or did they not quite know what to do with Him? What was His favorite thing to do with the ones in His home? How did He experience love the most in His home? I don’t know the answers to these questions. But I do know that He was born into a family of people who were human to the core. And He must have experienced many of the same dynamics of family that we do. That’s no small thing. Family is important. That first Christmas, God built His family in a way He never had before: in the flesh. He sent His own Son to make good on His promise to Abraham. Is it any wonder that He chose a bright shining star to point to the One who would fulfill the promise of Abraham’s family being more numerous than alllll of the stars? For all the ups and downs that our families experience, all the joys and heartaches, coming together and falling apart...God wants to be with us...right in the middle of it all. He wants to be the heart of our families and He wants our hearts to belong to HIS family. That snapshot we all have in our heads from the manger scene? The one with the parents and the newborn King? That’s God welcoming us into His family. Now that...that’s a picture perfect portrait of what the wholeness of family looks like. #advent #christmas #ChristianWomen #IntentionalLiving #Hope #Jesus #December #SheReadsTruth #HopeWriters #family #HolyFamily #FamilyOfGod #Church #grief #familydrama #redemption #traditions #CountdownToChristmas #ChristmasTree #ChristmasDecorations #InCourage #Encouragement #Devotional #ChristianCreatives #familyfun #adventure #CommunityOfChristianCreatives

As @jason_upton aptly sings, “Be is the beginning of Being / Be is the Beginning of Belonging / Be is the beginning of Behaving and Believing / Be is the Beginning of Becoming / the Beloved” (Be Still—Live). In the stillness we can hear the words the noise loses—the words spoken by the One who alone defines our identity.⁣ ⁣ Friend, all of our good-intentioned doing doesn’t define us. The size and number of the gifts we wrap this Christmas doesn’t define us. The amount of our giving, the degree of our sacrifices, the size of our hearts—they don’t define us. Even our best efforts to notice and value and build community with our neighbors doesn’t define us.⁣ ⁣ But I need to slow down—welcome the white in December—to not miss the voice that matters most.⁣ ⁣ ** Excerpt from “White in December: Slowing Down to Simply Be”—link in profile.⁣ ⁣ #uncommonnormal #missionalliving #missionalcommunity #discipleship #disciplesmakingdisciples #identity #lovingmyactualneighbor #missionalcommunitylife #onmission #everydaymission #missionary #familyonmission #neighboring #helloneighbor #advent2019 #christmas2019 #whitechristmas #enneagram9 #hopewriter #hopewriters #hopewriterlife #bloggersofinstagram #bloggersofig #faithwriters #faithblogger #christianwriting #shewritestruth #gritandgrace⁣

@lysaterkeurst talked Thursday night at Hope Church about the breakup of her marriage and how God had prepared her by telling her 2 things: 1-Trust His timing and 2-Love your husband. She didn’t know then that these things were preparing her for what her husband was about to tell her. Then she told us all about forgiveness and I know her words touched many women. I saw tears flowing from hurt hearts all over the room. So I began to pray for them as Lysa talked. And then I saw hope start forming in those same hearts. She had said, “Forgiveness is a process. Healing is a long journey. And I’ll never ever criticize another person for choices they made that were different than mine when placed in the same horror and heartbreak as me. Or maybe they had no choice at all. I have nothing but tender love and understanding. It’s a brutal walk. I want to encourage those walking through really difficult marriage situations to know that redemption is possible, she added. Maybe it’s going to come in a different package than mine. Redemption and restoration don’t always hold hands, and that relationship may not be restored, but with God, redemption is always possible.” . . . . . . . . . . . . #wordbeforeworld #incourage #hopewriters #hopewriter #hopewriterlife #storyofmytable #christianblogger #instafaith #letteringartist #thehappyplanner #plannerlove #blogger_de #biblestudy #bujoweekly #bujoaddicts #bujoinspo #bulletjournal #illustratedfaithcommunity #illustratedfaith #biblejournaling #biblejournalingcommunity #indexcardart #letteringhislove #letteringchallenge #illustragram #encouragementgallery #lifewaywomen #bedeeplyrooted #plannercommunity

Thank you @mochaloungefw for giving us a space to do that! 2020 is the year of women linking arms & embracing real all for the name & glory of God. Tonight one of the ladies was intent on knowing the name of every woman there tonight. It made me think of God’s character because he personally sees, knows, loves, & values his own to where he would stop & say, like my friend tonight, what is YOUR name. Live loved because you are. 💗

Trusting that we matter to someone else and allowing ourselves to take up space in their life is courageous, sometimes excruciating, and a central way the gospel takes root in our lives. God loves you, and you learn it’s true by letting someone else love you too.
