“There you stand; don’t mask your beauty. Striving beyond the clouds; obscured but not obstructed. Let’s be seen for a moment. At least until the curtains change paths.”

Dawa Tamang and myself sharing a special sunrise filled moment on the ridge line summit of Kala Patthar (meaning “Black Rock” in Nepali) at 5550m above sea level, below Pumori. #adventure #expedition #amazingplaces #everestbasecamp #trekking #expeditionleader #kalapatthar #pumori #everest #wildernessmedicine #mountains #whyilovemyjob #seekdiscomfort #pushyourself #mountainadventures #mountainview #specialmoments #perspective

Ama Dablam showing its beauty in the background, while a helicopter takes off for a routine supply drop above Namche Bazar. - - - As you go higher above sea level, air density decreases. This is why people have difficulty breathing at higher altitudes in mountainous regions. The flight path to Everest Base Camp at times has an air density around half of what it is at sea level! Therefore, the lift generated by that rarefied air also drops to around half of the amount of lift that’s generated under standard sea-level conditions. However, you still have to support the weight of the helicopter and its passengers, so you can’t accept that massive drop in lift and still expect to stay in the air! - - - To simplify it all, these birds have extremely powerful engines, larger than standard rotors, and pilots with a lot of balls!

Approximately 1 out of every 4 people that live in Laos are at or below the poverty line. Child mortality rate is pretty poor too (even compared to the surrounding nations!!). It’s easy to get sidetracked by the beautiful and spectacular scenery, without realising the situation and state of poverty there. This moment captured in the photo above put it all into perspective for me: “The young boy (probably only 7 or 8yrs old) was sweeping the road one morning. When I passed him 1hr later he was slightly further down the road but still going for it. 5hrs later I returned walking on my way back into town. He was now about 200m up the road, but STILL sweeping away. It was then that I thought of my cousin living back home in the UK of a similar age.” #laos #poverty #childpoverty #perspective #seasiatravel #contemplations #southeastasia

Arachnophobia warning ahead!.. Chilling out under these small waterfalls not too far out from Luang Namtha was a great stop off on our way to some cave exploring further out of town. Nice to spot a couple of these spiders on the rock next to me just in time #expedition #jungleview #rainforest #luangnamtha #exploring #discovery #amazing #adventure #explore #seekdiscomfort #travelphotography #jungle #laos #travellaos

20/07/16 - Prior to 2013, Muang Ngoi had no road access. The only way in and out was by using this connecting river to Nong Khiaw. It really felt like jungle paradise when I reached this far corner of the country. Without a doubt heading further up stream passing the more remote tribal communities is what I’d do if I ever returned someday! Stunning place, words and panoramas simply don’t do it justice. #expedition #jungleview #rainforest #muangngoi #exploring #discovery #amazing #jungleriver #adventure #explore #seekdiscomfort #travelphotography #jungle #thelostcityofz #laos #travellaos
